Tohoku University Material Solutions Center (MaSC) is a cooperative base between industry, academics and government that has been set up in a joint effort by Tohoku University and its Institute for Materials Research, Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advance Metals, and Institute of Fluid Science and uses grants for facilities expenses from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Development of synthesis methods for new phosphors for white LEDs
White LEDs are a next generation lighting device possessing superior characteristics involving high efficiency, long lifetime, and no use of mercury in comparison with conventional incandescent and fluorescent lamps, but the white LEDs currently supplied have problems in terms of low color rendering index and high color temperature. This project aims to develop new (oxy)nitride phosphors capable of application to high function white LEDs that can be used in various situations.
