Tohoku University Material Solutions Center (MaSC) is a cooperative base between industry, academics and government that has been set up in a joint effort by Tohoku University and its Institute for Materials Research, Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advance Metals, and Institute of Fluid Science and uses grants for facilities expenses from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Facilities

Special features of the center

The purpose of this center is to promote inovation, entrepreneurship and industrialization of the fruit from the joint-research between the Tohoku university and private comanies on new materials for the future under the "Under One Roof" policy.
The center houses more than 15 projects and laboratories in its 5 floors in fields of "Energy", "Electronics" and "Social Infrastructure" etc.. On the first floor, an information survice room and common equipment rooms with high-tech equipments for analysis and fabrication of new materials. The center is set up so that researchers can use it on a daily basis. For this purpose, some open lounges and meeting rooms are equipped to help the communication and collaboration among project members.
In the future, we aim to work together with other development centers such as the center for rare metals, the TR center (in the medical field), and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology synergistically in a new conception called the "Sendai Material Valley".

Seismic isolator equipped
The center building is base isolated with seismic isolators made of laminated rubber and dampers. The areas that have seismic isolators installed are called "base-isolated layers". These areas are designed to absorb the heavy shock during an earthquake to keep the "base-isolated layers" stable without serious vibrations.
